Launch of the Biomethane Industrial Partnership for the scale-up of biomethane

In its REPowerEU plan of May 2022, the European Commission highlights the need to rapidly scale up biomethane: “Boosting sustainable biomethane production to 35 bcm by 2030 is a cost-efficient path to achieve our ambition to reduce imports of natural gas from Russia”.

One of the actions proposed in the Biomethane Action Plan, is the creation of a Biomethane Industrial Partnership. This was officially launched by the European Commission, Member States and industry leaders on the 28th of September, during the European Sustainable Energy Week.

The Biomethane Industrial Partnership is open to all interested stakeholders who wish to achieve the EU target for biomethane production. All EU Member States are invited to join the Biomethane Industrial Partnership, together with companies, industry associations, academia and civil society organisations.
The BIP work has been structured in 5 Task Forces in which members collaborate at expert level on specific topics.

A technical kick-off of took place on 25th of October 2022 during the European Biogas Association (EBA) annual conference.
