Biofuels embody all of EBTC's sectors of interest; Biotechnology, Energy, Environment and Transport. EBTC has been involved in investigating opportunities for EU-India collaborations in this sector. EBTC has interest in using microalgae biotechnology to fashion biofuels that can be used in the energy and transport sectors sustainably by reducing environmental concerns at all nodes of the biofuel value chain.

One activity was to establish a multi-stakeholder platform for establishing sustainable solutions for Jatropha-based biofuels in India on December 21, 2012. Leveraging the success of this platform, EBTC is developing an initiative on biofuels (including Jatropha) in 2013 that will seek to broaden the platform to include all biofuels and extend the platform for both European and Indian business and research organisations.

The long-term strategic objective of this initiative is to create a global platform starting with Europe and India to bring the necessary expertise and assets together to address the issues and challenges in an integrated manner along the entire value chain of biofuels in India.

In essence, the aim is create a biofuel platform for knowledge exchange, commercial partnering and dialogue between working entities on the following:

1. The barriers (technical, commercial, land use)
2. The challenges (biodiversity rights, fragmented policies, market entry), and
3. The possible solutions (non-toxic varieties, better industrial processes, international collaboration)
