A governmental, sectoral research institute with over 330 researchers. In the field of biofuels the most important activity in Metla at the moment is the research and development programme "Bioenergy from Forests" (2007-2011). The programme consists of four sub-programmes: 1. Production of forest biomass and forest-based bioenergy resources, 2. Consequential effects of biomass harvesting, 3. Biomass supply, business models and means of energy policy and 4. Novel products.
