A research and innovation funding institution, contributing to the promotion of a Nordic Research and Innovation Area in the fields of new energy technologies and systems in order to create opportunities in the region through common Nordic solutions. In addition focus is being placed on adjacent regions and the EU. Activities include bioenergy and biofuels, including the project "New, innovative pre-treatment of Nordic wood for cost-effective fuel-ethanol production". NER hosts a bioenergy database of over 250 members that facilitates cooperation in the Baltic Sea region. Currently NER is administrating a project for the Nordic Council of Ministers that evaluates consequences of an expanding Nordic bioenergy market and enhances coordination of bioenergy initiatives. NER collaborates with the Baltic Sea Region Energy Co-operation (BASREC), including the Bioenergy Working Group, and is involved in the development of a joint BASREC and Baltic 21 strategic bioenergy project.
