This report provides an EU27 biofuels policy overview and estimates of production, supply, and demand for bioethanol and biodiesel. Information on biomass, such as wood pellets, and advanced biofuels is also provided. The overall market for biofuels in the EU continues to be driven by policies at both the EU and Member State level. Despite steady increases in consumption, the EU did not achieve its biofuel blending targets for 2010. EU imports of a range of biofuels – bioethanol, biodiesel, and wood pellets - are expected to grow in 2011. In 2011, total EU imports of bioethanol are forecast to be close to 1 billion liters, with the U.S. gaining market share. The trade in biodiesel is increasingly influenced by differences in the timing and manner in which Member States implement the Renewable Energy Directive’s sustainability requirements.
