The CENER Biomass Department performs applied research activities in the field of biomass energy, providing services and technical advice to all the agents of the sector: associations, public administrations, users, producers, financial institutions, etc.

CENER Biomass Department is committed to Biorefinery as key concept to sustainable growth and energy diversification based on the effective use of wastes. Production of biomaterials and bioenergy from renewable feedstocks – such as agriculture and forestry residues, industrial byproducts or organic fraction from municipal solid wastes – is the main driver in the strategy of the Department. Biomass Department dedicates its efforts to:

- new biochemical developments

- and new thermochemical developments

Biomass Department is also expert on the sustainable management of biomass. Biomass Department covers the entire R&D stages, starting with the proof of concept at lab scale, if required, up to demonstration scale. For that purpose, CENER has its own Biorefinery Demo Plant named “CB2G: Second Generation Biofuel Center”. The facility includes several Process Development Units such as:

- Pre-treatment

- Torrefaction

- Gasification

- Biochemical processes units.

These units include flexibility to handle a wide range of feedstocks, ability to incorporate and test equipment from partners or third-parties into whole conversion processes and changing configurations and flexible scaling-up: from pilot to semiindustrial.
