The Central European Initiative is an Intergovernmental Organisation with eighteen Member States, nine of which are also Members of the European Union. Its mission statement summarises the scope of its activities: Regional Cooperation for European Integration . The priorities for its Work Plan are: Energy , Environment, Agriculture, Sustainable Socio-economic Development through Innovation (with special attention to SMEs), Science and Technology, Lifelong Education and Advanced Training. In this framework, CEI Secretariat is promoting a regional and interdisciplinary research project in the field of Next Generation Biofuels. The basic idea consists in launching a global project involving all the competences which already exist and are working in this field in Member States, or which could be easily attracted to join in this strategic effort, as well as in creating new competences as appropriate, in order to get final breakthroughs and possibly technology innovation before 2020.
