Cargill is the fourth largest producer of biofuels in the United States, in addition to having production facilities in Europe and Brazil. Its European R&D centre is near Brussels in Belgium. Cargill is a major shareholder in Virent, which has developed technology to produce drop-in biofuels using a thermo-catalytic process.
