Production Facilities

Many companies are pursuing projects to develop and demonstrate advanced biofuel and bioenergy technologies. A large variety of feedstocks, conversion technologies, and products are currently under research, development and deployment, and the technology readiness levels (TRLs) of the applied technologies vary. The list and the map below provide an overview of demonstration facilities for the production of advanced biofuels and intermediate bioenergy carriers; applying one of the filters allows to find answers to multiple questions such as which facilities are currently operational, or how many facilities producing cellulosic ethanol are already at TRL8. The final report called "Innovative financial instruments for First-of-a-Kind, commercial-scale demonstration projects in the field of energy" on a study, commissioned by DG Research & Innovation, has been published in 2019. It presents the role of financial instruments in the support of commercial-scale, first-of-a-kind (FOAK) energy demonstration projects focused on Sustainable Energy Technology (SET) sectors in Europe.

The report "Current status of advanced biofuels demonstrations in Europe" was prepared by ETIP Bioenergy Working Group 2 (Conversion Processes) and ETIP-B-SABS2 project team and published in 2020.

The information displayed is being collated in a collaborative effort of ETIP Bioenergy and several IEA Bioenergy Tasks. The members of the ETIP Bioenergy Steering Committee and the Working Groups, and the members of IEA Bioenergy Task 39 (Commercializing Liquid Biofuels), IEA Bioenergy Task 33 (Gasification of Biomass and Waste), and IEA Bioenergy Task 34 (Direct Thermochemical Liquefaction) provide information about new projects and help to establish contact with those companies that pursue these projects. Detailed information is then provided by the companies, and critically reviewed by experts. While ETIP Bioenergy displays European projects for advanced biofuels and bioenergy technologies here, the other groups operate technology specific displays of the projects, but with global coverage.
