ETIP-B-SABS 2 - European Technology and Innovation Platform Bioenergy - Support of Renewable Fuels and Advanced Bioenergy Stakeholders 2
Bioenergy, Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels play a key role in the energy and climate strategy of the EU. So far, they are the only renewable energy carrier which contributes significantly to the energy demand of the transport sector. In the medium term this will continue, in particular for sectors such as heavy duty road transport and aviation.
Since 2016, the former European Biofuels Technology Platform (EBTP) active since 2006 transformed to the European Technology and Innovation Platform Bioenergy (ETIP Bioenergy), aiming to support the development of cost-competitive world-class Bioenergy, Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels value chains and the acceleration of their sustainable deployment in the EU.
From September 2018, ETIP Bioenergy is assisted by a specific project called ETIP-B-SABS 2 (Grant Agreement no. 825179). This project, funded under the Horizon 2020 Framework Programme for Technology and Innovation of the European Commission, will maximize the impact of the activities promoted by the platform among bioenergy stakeholders at European and global level.
The objective of the ETIP Bioenergy-SABS 2 project is to provide support to all activities of ETIP Bioenergy which are of interest to the Bioenergy, Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels community and for the general public. This includes information about technological, market, political, regulatory and financial developments and deployment activities such as the set-up and operation of pilot and demonstration facilities and surrounding research. The advancement of the SET Plan objectives as well as the implementation of the ETIP Bioenergy Strategic Research and Innovation Agenda (SRIA) are major foci in the work programme of the project.
The team of the ETIP-B-SABS 2 project initiates discussion and interaction between stakeholders and working groups of the ETIP Bioenergy on 'hot topics' related to the accelerated deployment of the most promising value chains for Bioenergy, Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels technologies. Informing current debates with scientifically correct, unbiased information will serve to stakeholders to get policy, legal framework and technical support to their investment strategies in the near future.
Key instruments to achieve this aim is the ETIP Bioenergy website with all the useful resources as factsheets, reports, newsletters, videos on interviews by experts and narrative videos. In addition, a calendar of initiatives, such as policy meetings, technical workshops, networking events at different scales, and the new Wiki Collaboration Platform are foreseen as well.
ETIP-B-SABS 2 project will support the four ETIP Bioenergy Working Groups (comprising a pool of experts from research, industry, governments and NGOs) in providing expertise in four key areas to:
- Biomass availability: improve feedstock sustainability and availability by addressing logistics, land use issues and production of a diversity of feedstocks (wastes, aquatic and microbial biomass, cellulosic energy crops, etc);
- Conversion: demonstrate conversion of feedstocks to advanced biofuels via innovative technologies at industrial scale (biochemical, thermochemical, etc), to establish best-performing value chains, overcome technical bottlenecks, and lower capex and opex;
- End use: develop end-use of advanced biofuels in road, air, marine and rail transport and other uses, through innovations in fuel use, engines and infrastructure;
- Markets and sustainability: accelerate market deployment of the most promising bioenergy and renewable fuels to contribute to the EU strategy on climate change mitigation and sustainable transport across all Member States; improve European energy security and technology leadership, and help creating 1000s of new jobs in the Bioenergy, Advanced Biofuels and Renewable Fuels sector.
The ETIP-B-SABS 2 project is coordinated by the Agency for Renewable Resources (FNR) in Germany that has been in charge of major activities of the platform since it was launched in 2006. FNR is the central coordinating agency in the area of Renewable Resources in Germany acting on behalf of the German Federal Ministry of Food and Agriculture (BMEL).
Bioenergy2020+ is the Austrian competence centre for bioenergy R&D and has been involved in numerous national, European and international projects in biofuels and bioenergy research and biofuels dissemination. Bioenergy2020+ takes responsibility for renewable fuels and bioenergy sector monitoring and information on both low and high TRL level.
ETA-Florence Renewable Energies (ETA) is an Italian consultancy and engineering firm active in the field of renewable energy since 1994. ETA provides expertise in the field of impact maximization of messages coming from the platform organizing large events open to the scientific and industrial community. In addition, ETA is in charge of the platform website, the promotion of the platform activities on social media channels and the realization of videos and webinars.
The Central European Initiative (CEI), based in Italy, has a wide network of contacts with ministries and researchers in Central, Eastern and South Eastern Europe, and is mostly responsible for an efficient stakeholder base mobilisation and engagement all across Europe.
RISE Innventia and RISE Research (merged in RISE Research Institutes of Sweden AB) are two public institutes actively supporting Swedish industry, providing increased benefits for trade and industry, and society in general. RISE combines applied research and development, industrialisation and verification, and quality assurance. RISE will create opportunities to continuously activate the platform stakeholder base through several means, including co-creation of knowledge and advanced interaction on debates with socio-economic implications in the European society.
